Can dogs have a period?And how long does it last?

my dog just today started bleeding from her *** does it mean she has a period?and when does it end?

A dog goes into heat. She does not have a period. Yes, blood is lost but for a completely different reason. Look up the canine "estrus cycle" and compare it with the human "menstrual cycle" and you will see there is a difference in the reasons for blood loss. 

A heat lasts three weeks and it recommended you get her spayed as soon as this one is over to prevent cancers, infection. unwanted litters of puppies, etc. It does not harm her or make her put on weight or any of that rubbish and it may save her life should it prevent uterine cancer or some life-threatening infection. 

ADD: Biologically she is ready to have puppies at her first heat (7 months is about normal) but no female should be allowed to until it is 2 years of age. Humans start their periods at an average of 12 years but would a human be ready to have a baby at that age? Of course not. A similar concept holds for dogs.

How can we ease pain from a dog who has cancer?

My boyfriend and I have been housesitting for the past 2 weeks for his mom who is in Europe. A week and a half ago we noticed she wasnt eating and thought she could just be depressed. After a few days of barely eating and drinking a ton of water, we thought something is wrong and took her to a vet. $900 later we found out that she "most likely" has cancer in her spleen, liver, kidneys and a mass in her abdomen. I say most likely because her ultrasound shows thee type of nodules that are present, the way they look, are suspicious of cancer. They wanted $400 more to do the biopsy. She is 11 and weak with IMHA and needs also a blood transfusion. Doc doesnt think she will make it through. She is not eating still and now not drinking any water and barely able to go outside. She is however very active at night pacing while we are sleeping and dont know why that is. 

The family is a mess and Im trying to help out in any way. What advice do you have to help ease "Lella's" pain? I know putting her to sleep is next but we are so torn in doing that because his mom is out of the country, she is having a hard time letting go without saying goodbye....this has been so difficult. I want to give the poor dog something to help her in the meantime and he and his mom are not thinking clearly. 

 Ask your boyfriend to call his mom NOW and ask her "do we really want to let Lellas's pain continue until you can come home?" 

It would be selfish of her to do so. I recently had to put my 14 year old friend down (Siberian Husky). My only regret is that I allowed her pain to linger two or three days longer than I should have. 

If the vet says that treatment WILL prolong life and make her more comfortable maybe worth a try. I doubt the vet will give any sort of hope such as that though.

How long do dogs that have cancer live for?

my dog has a lump on his foot and they did tests and have said it is a cancer tumour... 

were going tomorrow to talk about the options but im just wondering if you dont get any treatment and just let the dog die naturally how long do they live for? 

or how long does it take for them to get really ill and NEED to be put down? 

hes already had the lump for about 6 months and he seems absolutely happy and in no pain atall... 

btw hes a lurcher (if that makes a difference atall ?)

 Best Answer:  I think it's hard to say. It depends mostly on the type of cancer, but also on things like whether or not it's spread to adjacent lymph nodes/organs and also on the dog breed. 

I wouldn't jump the gun just yet. Earlier this year what we thought was an infection from a split toenail turned out to be squamous cell cancer (even the initial biopsy had it wrong). We know it was SCC because we got the toe amputated and they checked again on the removed toe. It's been a couple months now and he's back to his energetic self for the most part (he's 10)

my dog went to the vet about a week ago and my mom told me today that my dog had a mass on her liver and that it is probably cancer :((((. i just want to know about how long my dog has left. she is a 13-year-old labrador retriever

:  I would say not too much longer, but that's because your lab is already 13. I had a lab/ beagle mix that lasted until 12 with cancer. It was pretty bad. When your dog starts to have bad days outweighing the good days, it's time to put down. 

I know what it's like living with a dog with cancer. I'm so sorry for you. What helped me was knowing that i brought my dog to life expectancy with quality of life. Your dog is at life expectancy now. Has she lived a full life until now? If so, you should be proud and so will she.

Dog with cancer- how long to live?

My dog was diagnosed with cancer and was given 2 months to a year to live (This was April 1st.) This morning I woke up to bloody vomit all through the kitchen and on all the dog bedding. She continues to vomit blood/clots periodically. She is restless, tired, and won't eat or drink. I know there is nothing I can do for her at this point but I was simply wondering how long I expect her to live in this kind of condition. I wouldn't think it would be very long but I'd mostly like to have a guideline on what I can possibly expect. As today is Sunday I won't be taking her to the vet but if she is still alive through the night I plan on having her put down. I don't want to see her suffer.

It wasn't at all fun to watch but my mom and I sat by her side and helped her through it all telling her she'd be able to see her brother, Howie, soon. 

(Howie was hit by a car April 22, 2007).

Update 2: Oh, and for the e-vet woman. 

I hate to tell yah, but I live in the middle of no where, and the nearest emergency vet is over 10 hours away. 

It had nothing to do with me wanting my dog to suffer, we simply didn't know how long she had (she saw the vet 4 damn days ago) and when we woke up this morning to everything going on we weren't quite sure what to do. 

She lived a good happy life and I'm proud to say I was there for her in the end loving her every step of the way!

Best Answer:  3 years ago my dog had leukemia, jaundice, and autoimmune deficiency and she lived for 2 months after her diagnosis (she also had a blood transfuaion) she was bad like your dog at first, she would faint and stuff but after 2 days of that she seemed to get a little better untill she got worse again a few days before we put her down, so mabe your dog will get alittle better soon. mabe he/she is having a bad day and will feel better tomorrow. i would give it a few more days unless he/she is really suffering.

My dog died from cancer when she was 9 if you have an experiance with a dog dieing from cancer please tell me. My dog lived about 6 months with cancer in her leg but then we put her down beacuse the tumor in her leg got so big it started to bleed. :(

Depends on the type of cancer and how quickly it's diagnosed and treated. 

My Lab Molly showed the first signs of illness in December 2003, but it was that far advanced that there was nothing that the vet could do for her, by the 1st of Feb 2004 she was suffering too much and had no quality of life, she had spent 5 days at the vets and was just getting gradually worse, so l had to make the decision to let her go, she had suffered enough and it was the last think l could do to help her. 

She was only 6 years old, and only lived for a few weeks after being diagnosed, if the cancer had been diagnosed earlier then maybe with treatment she would have had longer, but she didn't show any signs of illness until it was too late. 

Best Answer:  I've got a dog with cancer he's had it for a year or two. It started as a little lump on his back, that got surgically removed. It came back on his shoulder and is humongous. I feel so bad for him he doesnt seem to be bothered by it at all hes acting like his normal self. I think I accidentally poisoned my dog please help?

I gave him ham that contained cherry powder, before knowing that cherries kill dogs. He is only 6 pounds and he ate a huge slice of ham cause that's what I had his pills in. Please help all the vets in the area are closed

Medications do not need to be placed or wrapped in anything. Pills were given years ago very simply even before pill pockets were invented. 

Your veterinarian will tell you if your dog's medication(s) can be given with food or if it must be given on an empty stomach. 

How To Give Your Dog A Pill Or Capsule In 5 Easy Steps 

Step 1 

Place the pill between the thumb and the index finger of one hand. Firmly grasp the upper jaw with thethumb and index finger of the other hand. 

Step 2 

Gently fold the upper lip over the teeth as you open the mouth. This will reduce the chance of being bitten. 

Step 3 

Rotate your wrist to tilt the head upwards. Use your middle finger to slowly open the lower jaw. 

Step 4 

Keep your middle finger over the small incisor teeth and deposit the pill as far back on the tongue as possible. Immediately close the mouth. Keeping your hand over the mouth, put the head down to facilitate swallowing. 

Step 5 

Stroke the throat or blow on the nose to encourage swallowing. Hold mouth closed and continue to stroke until swallowed. 

After you release his jaws, your dog may still spit out the pill if he hasn't swallowed. If this happens, it's probably because the pill was released too far forward on the tongue, which makes it easy for the dog to hold it in his mouth until he's free. Repeat the steps and try to get the pill as far back on the tongue as possible. 

In the future feed your dog properly* and nothing else, then there will be no need for any questions. 

Do not give too many cherries to your dog, limit your dog to one (small dogs) to two (larger dogs) or risk your dog having runny poo. 

Cherries are ok for dogs to eat as long as you remove the pits before giving them to your dog. 

Only feed your dog fresh cherries, never give cherries that have been soaked in sugar, or are pickled or OR HAVE ANY OTHER SEASONING ON THEM.
