Can dogs have a period? And how long does it last?

Can dogs have a period? And how long does it last?

my dog just today started bleeding from her *** does it mean she has a period?and when does it end?
Update: what does it mean she is on heat?
Update 2: we put a diaper for dogs on her, should we have done that?
Update 3: shes bearly like 7 months, how can she be ready to have puppies?
A dog goes into heat. She does not have a period. Yes, blood is lost but for a completely different reason. Look up the canine "estrus cycle" and compare it with the human "menstrual cycle" and you will see there is a difference in the reasons for blood loss.

A heat lasts three weeks and it recommended you get her spayed as soon as this one is over to prevent cancers, infection. unwanted litters of puppies, etc. It does not harm her or make her put on weight or any of that rubbish and it may save her life should it prevent uterine cancer or some life-threatening infection.

ADD: Biologically she is ready to have puppies at her first heat (7 months is about normal) but no female should be allowed to until it is 2 years of age. Humans start their periods at an average of 12 years but would a human be ready to have a baby at that age? Of course not. A similar concept holds for dogs.

How can we ease pain from a dog who has cancer?

How can we ease pain from a dog who has cancer?

My boyfriend and I have been housesitting for the past 2 weeks for his mom who is in Europe. A week and a half ago we noticed she wasnt eating and thought she could just be depressed. After a few days of barely eating and drinking a ton of water, we thought something is wrong and took her to a vet. $900 later we found out that she "most likely" has cancer in her spleen, liver, kidneys and a mass in her abdomen. I say most likely because her ultrasound shows thee type of nodules that are present, the way they look, are suspicious of cancer. They wanted $400 more to do the biopsy. She is 11 and weak with IMHA and needs also a blood transfusion. Doc doesnt think she will make it through. She is not eating still and now not drinking any water and barely able to go outside. She is however very active at night pacing while we are sleeping and dont know why that is.

The family is a mess and Im trying to help out in any way. What advice do you have to help ease "Lella's" pain? I know putting her to sleep is next but we are so torn in doing that because his mom is out of the country, she is having a hard time letting go without saying goodbye....this has been so difficult. I want to give the poor dog something to help her in the meantime and he and his mom are not thinking clearly.
Ask your boyfriend to call his mom NOW and ask her "do we really want to let Lellas's pain continue until you can come home?"

It would be selfish of her to do so. I recently had to put my 14 year old friend down (Siberian Husky). My only regret is that I allowed her pain to linger two or three days longer than I should have.

If the vet says that treatment WILL prolong life and make her more comfortable maybe worth a try. I doubt the vet will give any sort of hope such as that though.

How long do dogs that have cancer live for?

How long do dogs that have cancer live for?

my dog has a lump on his foot and they did tests and have said it is a cancer tumour...
were going tomorrow to talk about the options but im just wondering if you dont get any treatment and just let the dog die naturally how long do they live for?
or how long does it take for them to get really ill and NEED to be put down?
hes already had the lump for about 6 months and he seems absolutely happy and in no pain atall...
btw hes a lurcher (if that makes a difference atall ?)
thanks.
Best Answer:  I think it's hard to say. It depends mostly on the type of cancer, but also on things like whether or not it's spread to adjacent lymph nodes/organs and also on the dog breed.

I wouldn't jump the gun just yet. Earlier this year what we thought was an infection from a split toenail turned out to be squamous cell cancer (even the initial biopsy had it wrong). We know it was SCC because we got the toe amputated and they checked again on the removed toe. It's been a couple months now and he's back to his energetic self for the most part (he's 10)

how long will my dog live with the cancer on her liver?

how long will my dog live with the cancer on her liver?

my dog went to the vet about a week ago and my mom told me today that my dog had a mass on her liver and that it is probably cancer :((((. i just want to know about how long my dog has left. she is a 13-year-old labrador retriever
Best Answer how long will my dog live with the cancer on her liver?
:  I would say not too much longer, but that's because your lab is already 13. I had a lab/ beagle mix that lasted until 12 with cancer. It was pretty bad. When your dog starts to have bad days outweighing the good days, it's time to put down.

I know what it's like living with a dog with cancer. I'm so sorry for you. What helped me was knowing that i brought my dog to life expectancy with quality of life. Your dog is at life expectancy now. Has she lived a full life until now? If so, you should be proud and so will she.

Dog with cancer- how long to live?

Dog with cancer- how long to live?

My dog was diagnosed with cancer and was given 2 months to a year to live (This was April 1st.) This morning I woke up to bloody vomit all through the kitchen and on all the dog bedding. She continues to vomit blood/clots periodically. She is restless, tired, and won't eat or drink. I know there is nothing I can do for her at this point but I was simply wondering how long I expect her to live in this kind of condition. I wouldn't think it would be very long but I'd mostly like to have a guideline on what I can possibly expect. As today is Sunday I won't be taking her to the vet but if she is still alive through the night I plan on having her put down. I don't want to see her suffer.

Thanks for any help!
Update: Just in case any of you that posted an answer decide to check in, I decided to leave this bit of info:

Minnie (miniature pinscher)
died this afternoon at 3:15 pm

It wasn't at all fun to watch but my mom and I sat by her side and helped her through it all telling her she'd be able to see her brother, Howie, soon.
(Howie was hit by a car April 22, 2007).

So...

March 29, 1996 - April 5, 2009

RIP Minnie CocoPuff

We'll all miss you!!!
Update 2: Oh, and for the e-vet woman.

I hate to tell yah, but I live in the middle of no where, and the nearest emergency vet is over 10 hours away.

It had nothing to do with me wanting my dog to suffer, we simply didn't know how long she had (she saw the vet 4 damn days ago) and when we woke up this morning to everything going on we weren't quite sure what to do.

She lived a good happy life and I'm proud to say I was there for her in the end loving her every step of the way!
Best Answer:  3 years ago my dog had leukemia, jaundice, and autoimmune deficiency and she lived for 2 months after her diagnosis (she also had a blood transfuaion) she was bad like your dog at first, she would faint and stuff but after 2 days of that she seemed to get a little better untill she got worse again a few days before we put her down, so mabe your dog will get alittle better soon. mabe he/she is having a bad day and will feel better tomorrow. i would give it a few more days unless he/she is really suffering.

How long can a dog live with cancer?

How long can a dog live with cancer?

My dog died from cancer when she was 9 if you have an experiance with a dog dieing from cancer please tell me. My dog lived about 6 months with cancer in her leg but then we put her down beacuse the tumor in her leg got so big it started to bleed. :(

Depends on the type of cancer and how quickly it's diagnosed and treated.

My Lab Molly showed the first signs of illness in December 2003, but it was that far advanced that there was nothing that the vet could do for her, by the 1st of Feb 2004 she was suffering too much and had no quality of life, she had spent 5 days at the vets and was just getting gradually worse, so l had to make the decision to let her go, she had suffered enough and it was the last think l could do to help her.
She was only 6 years old, and only lived for a few weeks after being diagnosed, if the cancer had been diagnosed earlier then maybe with treatment she would have had longer, but she didn't show any signs of illness until it was too late.
Best Answer:  I've got a dog with cancer he's had it for a year or two. It started as a little lump on his back, that got surgically removed. It came back on his shoulder and is humongous. I feel so bad for him he doesnt seem to be bothered by it at all hes acting like his normal self. Im thinking about having him being put down soon, hes starting to limp and hes got that pleading look in his eyes...Oh lord I've started to cry.

someone poisoned my dog

I think I accidentally poisoned my dog please help?

I gave him ham that contained cherry powder, before knowing that cherries kill dogs. He is only 6 pounds and he ate a huge slice of ham cause that's what I had his pills in. Please help all the vets in the area are closed
Medications do not need to be placed or wrapped in anything. Pills were given years ago very simply even before pill pockets were invented.

Your veterinarian will tell you if your dog's medication(s) can be given with food or if it must be given on an empty stomach.

How To Give Your Dog A Pill Or Capsule In 5 Easy Steps

Step 1
Place the pill between the thumb and the index finger of one hand. Firmly grasp the upper jaw with thethumb and index finger of the other hand.

Step 2
Gently fold the upper lip over the teeth as you open the mouth. This will reduce the chance of being bitten.

Step 3
Rotate your wrist to tilt the head upwards. Use your middle finger to slowly open the lower jaw.

Step 4
Keep your middle finger over the small incisor teeth and deposit the pill as far back on the tongue as possible. Immediately close the mouth. Keeping your hand over the mouth, put the head down to facilitate swallowing.

Step 5
Stroke the throat or blow on the nose to encourage swallowing. Hold mouth closed and continue to stroke until swallowed.

After you release his jaws, your dog may still spit out the pill if he hasn't swallowed. If this happens, it's probably because the pill was released too far forward on the tongue, which makes it easy for the dog to hold it in his mouth until he's free. Repeat the steps and try to get the pill as far back on the tongue as possible.

In the future feed your dog properly* and nothing else, then there will be no need for any questions.

Do not give too many cherries to your dog, limit your dog to one (small dogs) to two (larger dogs) or risk your dog having runny poo.

Cherries are ok for dogs to eat as long as you remove the pits before giving them to your dog.

Only feed your dog fresh cherries, never give cherries that have been soaked in sugar, or are pickled or OR HAVE ANY OTHER SEASONING ON THEM.

My puppy peed everywhere?

My puppy peed everywhere?

I just bought this puppy from a breeder for about 3,400 with shipping included and I left it home and the stupid thing peed everywhere. She is a French bulldog and I plan to Breed her but this dog is just a disguising little animals. I don't know what to do. My brother told me to just leave it outside so she's outside for the time being but none of my dogs like her either my German Shepard tried to bite her a couple of times but I am keeping this dog I can make a lot of money off her pups. How can I fix this peeing problem and I will not wake up in the middle of the night to take it out so if this is the case the dog will be an outside dog

Perfectly normal, puppies/dogs don't come trained that's your responsibility. Shouldn't have gotten any dog not knowing how to care for one properly, re-home it with someone who does and Really Cares.

Shepherd. Dogs aren't Lawn Ornaments* to be left outside unsupervised.

There is very little if any money to be made, even by reputable breeder, which obviously you're not. You'd be lucky to break even two out of three breedings.

Does my dog have diabetes?

Does my dog have diabetes?

My 7 year old mini schnauzer has been urinating in the house, drinking a ton of water and he appears to be losing weight. The urinating is very uncharacteristic of him, he's always been a well behaved dog. If he in fact has diabetes what are the cost associated with it? I'm trying to weigh the costs and his overall happiness vs. putting him down. This of course is all depending on the long term care of him.
Update: Thanks for all the advice/answers. I have a vet appointment set up for him. Hopefully nothing major but he needs to get check out for his well being and mine!

Vets love pets with diabetes, for them it's like hearing the the sound of a cash register everytime they diagnose it. It's a food only they carry, daily shots, needles, meter, all the stuff that goes with diabetes, so plan on a few hundred bucks a month with them. And God forbid you say anything about the cost, because then your not a humane owner. You'll get the "how can you put a price on his life" while your making his Mercedes payment.

my cat has diabetes not eating

My cat was tested for diabetes today, if the test comes back positive what can I expect as far as treatment?
will be for him from now on? He is over 14yrs old now,do you think he has a good chance once I start treatment?

Type 1 diabetes in dogs and cats is very similar to juvenile diabetes in people. Going to a human diabetes website will give you ideas you can apply to your pet. Although diet helps to control the disease in pets, once the disease begins, owners will need to administer insulin to keep the disease under control. This is a time consuming process that requires a great deal of dedication on your part. Most pets will require two injections per day of either ultralente or NPH insulin. When the correct dose is established there should be only intermittent low concentrations of sugar in the urine. In general, NPH insulin works best in dogs and ultralente human origin insulin works best in cats
Because no two pets react exactly the same to a given amount of insulin, changes in the dose administered should be done under observation in an animal hospital setting. This is particularly true with small and toy breeds where small dose changes can have major effects on blood glucose levels. I start dogs that weigh less than 30 pounds on 0.5units/pound body weight NPH insulin given once or twice a day. Dogs over thirty pounds begin on 0.25units/pound. Cats begin at 1-2 units of ultralente or PZI insulin (0.1 to 0.5U/lb) as a single morning injection. It is best to feed the pets at the time the insulin shot is given. Avoid using semi-moist diets because the are high in sugar. I have not had success in dogs and cats using oral glucose control drugs such as Glipizide. Once a successful insulin treatment has been established for your pet it needs to continue on it the rest of its life. The key to successful treatment is to keep to the treatment plan.

Female dogs that develop the disease do better when they are spayed. If you exercise your dog set the time and the length of your playtime the same every day.

Scientific studies, performed in 2005 (Nestle Purina Nutrition Forum) suggest that cats, which in Nature are strict carnivores, do not produce sufficient Glucokinase and Hexokinase, liver enzyme that are necessary for the metabolism (used) of glucose. Glucose is the end product of carbohydrates absorbed through the intestine. My interpretation of this data is that cats would have a tendency to high blood sugar and subsequent diabetes when fed a diet containing carbohydrates in quantity. Therefore, do not feed cats diets that are high in carbohydrates. Carbohydrates in cat foods are usually derived from plant products. Meat-based diets should contain very little carbohydrate.

You will need to be stricter about when, what and how much you feed your pet. If your pet is overweight begin a slow diet over three or four months to normalize its weight. Weight loss is easier if you feed your pet in three or four discrete meals always at the same time every day. Feed fat pets approximately two thirds of the amount it would eat if food were unrestricted. Feed dry kibble and avoid canned diets. Another approach is to feed high fiber/complex carbohydrate diets designed for weight loss. The high fiber in these diets is also beneficial in diabetes. Some dogs and cats, however, are thin from ketosis by the time the disease is diagnosed. In these pets a high caloric diet should be fed until the pet’s weight returns to normal. CNM, Hills, IVD and Eukanuba all offer diets suitable for diabetic pets.
If you feed three times a day, divide the feeding into equal amounts. Give your first feeding of the morning about a half-hour before its morning insulin injection.

pet and dog lovers only. my cairn/silky terrier is 8 years old. he has epilepsy for 4 years

Need advice...pet and dog lovers only. my cairn/silky terrier is 8 years old. he has epilepsy for 4 years, he?

was recently diagnosed w/diabetes, then cataracts and now lipids in his eyes, which prevent him from getting catarct surgery. he is on a special diet of real chicken and rice only. he gets pills 2x daly n liquids 1x daly for the epilepsy. i have to inject him 2x daly with insulin. he's on 3 different eye drops 2-3 each, daly. to add to this, my husband has a 14yr old beagle who is very territorial. (when my dog wanders around aimlessly b/c he can't see, he bumps into the beagle and the beagle attacks. up until the diabetes n blindness we were managing and my dog didn't seem so bad off. but now, i wonder if he's suffering. he's bumping into walls & banging into things. it's so painful to see. i can imagine how it's hurting him. i love him sooooo much. i also have a new baby in the house which also requires my time. plus, the financial aspect is draining us. do u think he's suffering? am i being selfish to keep him alive? serious replies only. we don't know what to do.
Update: the think is...he is sooo young to me...only 8 and i feel like he still has so many years left. but not years like the last months he's been living. if he can't have the cataract surgery i feel he will continue to suffer and it will torture him and us. but if he can have the surgery, i feel there is hope and a light at the end of the tunnel. i can't bear to make a choice. i am so sad, crying and feel so hopeless. thank u for ur thoughts and prayers.
Update 2: plus, he is getting skinny, and he's ravenous even right after i feed him. looking at him, so weak and frail, yet once so peppy and alive is killing me.
at this point i would say that the dog is probably suffering and that it would be best for him to let him go. i firmly believe that dogs feel in the same way that humans do, and i know that any human dealing with all of those problems would most likely want to end their suffering too. just be good to him, give him a lot of attention and love and make sure you let him know what a great addition he has been to your family and how much he has been there for you. even though he may not understand he will feel the emotion in your voice. tell him that he's a good dog, pet him, and make sure you hold him while he passes over.

i have to say, this is the first yahoo post that has ever made me cry. i will say a prayer for you and your family...........

14year old dog has diabetes?

14year old dog has diabetes?

my 14 year old lab has diabetes. the vet wants $400/ month to monitor it plus pills.
any home remedies? should i put him down? what should i do? i dont think i can afford that.
Joh has no idea what he/she is talking about. Diabetes is not an immune disease, it a pancreatic disease and the type of diet mentioned is not recommended. Been there.

Have you also had your dog checked for Cushing's disease which can cause diabetes? My dog developed diabetes and that's when we discovered Cushing's had caused the diabetes. We had to give her chemotherapy and insulin shots.

We did all the right things, spent thousands of $$ and she was dead within 3 months. Her insulin syringes cost $48 per month, the insulin was about $50, chemo pills were $10.25 EACH, the lab fees were off the charts and nothing helped.

It sounds so heartless to use the words "put him down" or euthanize but the truth of the matter is, your dog is sick and diabetes is incurable. Only you know what your decision should be.

Mercifully, my dog was lying in my arms getting a good tummy rub when she had a heart attack and died and we didn't have to make that decision. If you choose to have your lab "put to sleep," he won't feel any pain. He will just fall asleep and slip away. God also loves our doggy friends; he's installed a doggy door.

Can dogs eat human food?

Can dogs eat human food?

I mean, I know certain foods are restricted. I went to PetSmart (where they address the pets more than they do the humans), and they told me my dog was NEVER allowed to have ANY type of human food ever. My parents already think American dogs are spoiled for being allowed in the house XD Anyway, my older brother came to visit once, and he fed my dog a chicken bone. My dog didn't choke on it, but he did manage to eat it rather quickly. I don´t think dog food is very satisfying to dogs. I know healthy dogs that live off of table scraps...what´s with the obsession of keeping dogs unnaturally healthy?

Dog food is healthy for dogs. I understand where you come from though. Dogs were wild once, but now they are domesticated. This means they can no longer eat everything they used to in the wild. Chicken bones are bad for digestion. They can become lodged in the thought or cause a blockage in the intestine. Table scraps are not good because dogs can get diabetes. Not only that but dog's cant digest bread, wheat products of any kind, rice, and the like. We feed dog's food that is formulated for them. Dogs aren't humans, they can't eat a lot of the foods we do.

Can dogs get diabetes?

Can dogs get diabetes?-and what are the symptoms if there are any?
Update: My uncel has a dog with diabetes, and she is blind. So i dont want my dog blind! I am just making sure that she doesnt get it.

Yes dogs do get diabetes. If they are diagnosed then they will be put on a course of thyroxine which should stabilise the thyroid gland and therefore the insulin that is produced should come up to the required levels.

The cause isn’t known but medical experts feel it could be heredity, obesity and the taking of certain medications increase the chances of a dog developing diabetes. Diabetes mellitus can affect any age breed or sex of dog. though it is generally seen in dogs over the age of four.

Excessive drinking and urination are the most common symptoms, they are in no way the only ones. weight loss dogs can also develop signs of poor skin and hair coat, liver disease, vomiting, weakness in the rear legs (diabetic neuropathy), secondary bacterial infections and dehydration. They can also develop a life threatening condition known as ketoacidosis.

Dogs with diabetes suffer because of a under-active thyroid gland strangely enough in cats it is normally overactive.
