14year old dog has diabetes?
my 14 year old lab has diabetes. the vet wants $400/ month to monitor it plus pills.
any home remedies? should i put him down? what should i do? i dont think i can afford that.
Joh has no idea what he/she is talking about. Diabetes is not an immune disease, it a pancreatic disease and the type of diet mentioned is not recommended. Been there.
Have you also had your dog checked for Cushing's disease which can cause diabetes? My dog developed diabetes and that's when we discovered Cushing's had caused the diabetes. We had to give her chemotherapy and insulin shots.
We did all the right things, spent thousands of $$ and she was dead within 3 months. Her insulin syringes cost $48 per month, the insulin was about $50, chemo pills were $10.25 EACH, the lab fees were off the charts and nothing helped.
It sounds so heartless to use the words "put him down" or euthanize but the truth of the matter is, your dog is sick and diabetes is incurable. Only you know what your decision should be.
Mercifully, my dog was lying in my arms getting a good tummy rub when she had a heart attack and died and we didn't have to make that decision. If you choose to have your lab "put to sleep," he won't feel any pain. He will just fall asleep and slip away. God also loves our doggy friends; he's installed a doggy door.
